Cracked MacBook Case, Replaced Out of Warranty.

A typical cracked MacBook

A typical cracked MacBook

So about three months ago I noticed a crack on the right hand edge of my MacBook case, in no time this crack turned into a chip (see photo).

Last week the same thing happened to the left hand side and so I decided to do a bit of research and discovered I was not alone. Many MacBook owners are reporting the exact same problem and have even created a Flickr group dedicated to the problem. It was also mentioned by Adam Christianson on this weeks MacCast podcast.

The problem I have is that my MacBook is nearly three years old and two years out of warranty so I thought I had no chance of getting it repaired for free. Trying my luck I booked an appointment with a genius at my local Apple store (Lakeside, UK).

The genius took one look at my MacBook and told me that he was fully aware of the problem and that even though it was out of warranty he would still replace the top case, keyboard & trackpad for free (this usually carry’s a £109 charge).

4 hours later I received a call to tell me the MacBook had been repaired and was ready for collection, now that’s what I call good service!

If you have the same cracking problem with your ‘out of warranty’ MacBook I would strongly recommend taking it back for a free replacement case/keyboard.
